The Green Bay Route

 Product Description

Railroads powered entirely by Alco diesel locomotives are few in number. The Green Bay & Western Railroad had a total of sixteen operating Alco's when this show was filmed in 1992, GB&W's last full year of operation as an independent company. Indeed, the railroad had an affinity for Alco's since diesels first replaced steam locomotives, keeping them well maintained and looking great in their deep red paint scheme. Stretching from the east side to the west side of the Badger State, the Green Bay & Western line passed through scenic Wisconsin farmland. Much of the railroad's traffic was related to the state's booming paper industry. Local freights are seen in action as they work these vital enterprises. We follow road trains across the state, watching as they stop to pick up and set out cars. Powered by smoking and burbling Alco diesels, the trains put on fascinating shows working over the hills and through small towns. The essence and vitality of one of America's classic small railroads is preserved in this affectionate tribute. Listen to the rumble and see the smoke of those big red diesels along The Green Bay Route!
